– A detectable lack of originality is usually found when an author consistently composes work that bears an uncanny similarity to, or virtually duplicates, already published work. When what is being put out into the world appears to be nothing more than a repetition of common knowledge, without any new insight or original analysis, then it may well be that there is virtually no original thought and creativity.
- Repetitive Ideas:
– A writer without originality may often find themselves repeating the same ideas or concepts in several of their works. This only goes to show the inability to explore various different perspectives or to construct new and original viewpoints regarding any particular subject matter at hand. On the contrary, original work is bound to contain unique insights and perspectives that will differentiate it from the common, mundane stories that are rife within the literary world.
- Formulaic Approach:
– A glaring lack of originality can often be seen in a writer’s excessive dependence on set, formulaic patterns where each piece of writing, individually, is conformed to a pre-set, predictable pattern or template that has been repeated ad infinitum. In direct contrast, truly original work will often take that radical step of breaking free from the conventional format, thereby imparting a sense of freshness and innovation to the communication of information to the audience.
- Use of Borrowed Language and Phrasing:
Many writers who cannot rise to the challenge of originality will find themselves reverting to using exactly the same phrases and words they read in other sources—sometimes even subconsciously. In doing so, their work can become a mosaic, disjointed patchwork of borrowed expressions and not really an original and genuine portrayal of the writer’s voice. -
Lack of Personal Perspective:
– The material a writer originally produces often reflects the unique perspective or personal experiences belonging to that particular writer. If a writer consistently finds it difficult to bring about a personal touch or perspective to their work time and again, it might very well be a pointer to the fact that they are short of original thought. This often leads one to just rehash information without adding any real value by way of one’s own personal thoughts and reflections.
- Inability to Explore Diverse Sources:
– A lack of originality may be apparent where a writer relies too heavily on a narrow range of sources, therefore failing to search for and take into consideration a number of different views or include an abundance of differing opinions. This is where thorough investigation of a wide range of differing views, coupled with adequate synthesis of information from disparate sources, enriches the material.
